Goldie's Farmhouse Restaurant in Stewartsville
I know, I know. Well, I didn't. Friend Linda took me there -- Stewartsville is east of St. Joseph in DeKalb County and has maybe 700 residents. (That's a 2010 census aided guess.)
All 700 have probably eaten at Goldie's many times. And you should, too.
Simply stated, it's fabulous! Just about very single thing is "home-made" -- from scratch. The rolls. The pickles. The desserts. Those Brussels' sprouts? Made with bacon and cream. The soups? Each day there's at least one special one that's been simmering happily. That pork tenderloin sandwich? Home-made bun, hand breaded tenderloin which I swore I wouldn't eat all of. The baked fudge (big-picture)? I can only say, "Oh my."
This is a lunch and supper place. Every day there's some different things; others are favorites which people howl if they're gone. Beef and noodles. Catfish sandwich with cole slaw. Fall off the fork barbeque brisket. It's said that some have never recovered from the creme brûlée French toast served recently at a baby shower. There are also occasional reservation-only wine and beer dinners when the cuisine goes from delicious home-style to more sophisticated confections enjoyed by a maximum (and always to capacity) of 36 people. And this year they're open for Thanksgiving. Over the river and through the woods . . .
The lime-green restaurant on Main Street is truly a labor of love created by family -- from rehabbing a dilapidated small building (we're talking walling, flooring, grouting, roofing and on and on) that now looks like a farmhouse to preparing every meal, creative chef/owner Linda Witt offers daily tributes to her Grandmother Goldie, who taught her to cook when she was a little girl. It's all fresh, homegrown often, localish, scrumptious.
So from metro KC, this is a drive of maybe 1.2 hours. Trust me when I tell you it's WELL worth it.
You can get directions and hours (they're closed on Thursdays; open for brunch on Sundays) at
Plan your drive now. I am -- right after calling to see if the coconut pie is on the menu.
