You should know I am a Starlight fan and have gone regularly for several, several years. Sometimes I leave at the intermission (like at Camelot this year). Sometimes I go just because I like the evening at Starlight and being outside when the humidity doesn't match the temperature. Sometimes I go just cuz my friend and I have signed up. And sometimes I am just amazed.
That was last night. This is an extraordinary show. The lead, Sasha Allen, is simply amazing. Her voice. Whatta voice. Her dancing. Her body. Her arms. Her hugely strong performance until the very, very end. She is a reason to go all by herself.
Not to discount the rest of the group, especially Sam Lips as Pippin and Adrienne Barbeau as the grandmother who really has only one long scene and song and even acrobatics to herself.
I didn't know the story, didn't know anything about the musical other than it had won some Tonys. (Should that be Tonies?) Anyway, the music is great; the gymnastics and dancing (and magic!) are stunning; the set is clever; there's some unexpected and laugh-out loud humor; the vitality is there; and it is very thought-provoking.
BTW, one definition of Pippin is an excellent person or thing (North American informal). That is very true this week at Starlight.
